Up to 30% of Ukraine's territory was potentially contaminated with mines and unexploded ordnance after the start of the full-scale invasion. Today, this figure has already been brought down to 23%. Since the start of the Russian invasion, nearly 35,000 square kilometers of land, including agricultural areas, have been returned to use. This is approximately 5.7% of Ukraine's entire territory. In terms of the size of countries, it is an area larger than Belgium
This fall, Zapal had the opportunity to work on creating a website for Soul of Soil.
Today, everyone can explore the story of this art project, which draws attention to the issue of land contamination in Ukraine caused by mines and other explosive devices.
Soul of Soil is a joint advocacy project of the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Ukraine, the Moim.Ridnym (“To the Loved Ones”) social enterprise, and Ukrainian chef and influencer Olga Martynovska.
This project, through culinary arts, aims to draw attention to the problem of Ukraine's territory being contaminated with mines and other explosive devices, explain how this affects Ukraine's economy and global food security, and showcase the positive changes and results in demining, achieved notably through the use of innovative technologies.
Web-development for Soul of Soil
While working on the project's online business card, we created the UI/UX design, implemented development, and selected colors that best convey the story of the project.
We chose colors that reflect:
- Chornozem (black soil) – symbolizing fertile land scarred by mines and other explosive devices.
- A linen scarf – a key element of the art project.
- The calm and pure blue of the sky – along with the hues of wheat and rye, reminding us that "a saved grain can feed the world."
Tech
For this project it was important to have the website fast loading, high-quality developed and accessible.
We did the best within accessibility of colors and blocks size and positioning,
And Ofc, during web development, we adhered to the WCAG 2.2 standards.
As for tech stack, we used for this website SvelteKit.
Yes, that's exactly why this website loading time is like less than a second.
We've told more about the benefits of Svelte & SvelteKit here in our article.
Still, just few points to add in here:
As a client, you benefit from Svelte not just with the cost-optimization, but with the generally better user-experience. Faster loading times and smoother user experiences lead to higher user engagement and satisfaction with your app, web, etc.
Still
We needed to tell you some about tech, design, and colors - this project got more importance, than tech one.
It brings up the extra critical topics of demining Ukraine.
This is about the biggest war in Europe after WW2.
About russian war aggression in Ukraine for the past 11 years.
About global food security today.
